Strengths: Much stronger than on camera IR light, easy to use, bright, two battery type options, adjustable intensity
Summary: The Sony HVL-IRM Nightshot Video Light is worth the 30-something dollars I bought it for. I have both a Sony camcorder and Sony F717 camera that have a night shot mode, which this IR light can be used for both. The newer IR light Sony just released cannot. The IR light has an adjustable knob to control intensity, another great feature is that it can use two types of batteries, double AA or the Sony NP-FM50 battery, It is also very light.

The light is bright enough up to about 75 feet, but a stretch at 100 ft. In a room, the light tends to seem too focused, versus just illuminating the room evenly. The awkward sidebar which the IR light sits upon throws off the balance of the camera.

Over all I would recommend the unit if you have a specific need for it. I do fieldwork observing animals in their natural habitat and appreciate its usefulness.

Strengths: Portable, adjustable, lightweight
Summary: The difference in illumination over the camera's built-in is marked.
Hotspots are present but can be toned down SOMEWHAT with the adjustment knob.
The included mounting bar with it's pan-movement feature is sturdy and versatile.
I've only operated with the AA battery feature, still waiting for my charger for the \"M\" batteries. It's very nice that the light can be used remotely of the camera, even hand-held.
Overpriced via retail, and even some of the discounters, but I found mine through Pricegrabber for almost half that from one of the major E-tailers.
