Strengths: 4 PCI-E x8 Slots, Intigrated Sound Blaster X-fi Summary: I upgraded from an ASUS P5WDH-Deluxe MB to allow the addition of a second GeForce 8800 in SLI mode. The upgrade has been a disaster. Still can't get the 8800 to operate in SLI mode after 2 months.
This MSI board looks great on paper, but has all sorts of issues in actual use, and thier tech support will not resolve any.
The BIOS is really bad, many of the typical BIOS settings are absent. The BIOS automatically moves any new storage device to the top of the boot list on any change. So if you have multiple drives, or leave a USB drive attached, etc - your boot will often break requiring you to reset the boot order back to the intended order. This happens almost daily on a multi-drive system
The Southbridge chip interferes with the 3 slots next to it, many cards won't clear the depth and have to use other slots. (Forget using any 64bit PCI cards like a SCSI adapter)
The memory channels seem to have problems get dual channel operation set, even when using very high quality Corsair Memory and undersetting the frequency.
The sound card has no selection to set the use of the digital vs. fiber SP/DIF slots, so connecting your sound card fiber to your processor or speakers it out.
Finally they forgot to put any option to turn off the boot BIOS of the SATA raid controller. So if you use a RAID, you can't have any other drives. In fact adding a boot device like a SCSI device with RAID enabled locks the BIOS, you cant boot and the MB has to be manually cleared.
Worst MSI board I have ever used, pick something else.
Strengths: None so far. MSI still has this board and is taking forever to RMA it. Summary: MSI really sucks. I know there can be problems and somtimes you need to RMA a product, but when I had an issue with my Asus board they cross shipped one and took care of all charges. Now with MSI I paid shipping to them and am waiting in limbo with nothing, no eta or even hope that it will be fixed soon. The board was new, they should just send a new board in my opinion. Don
