Marketing Information
Protection of your network is a mission critical activity. At Linksys, we build powerful security into every product, to keep your wired and wireless networks safe. Linksys Small Business Series systems have advanced firewall, encryption and authentication features to protect you from network threats - threats that can seriously disrupt or damage your business by stealing your valuable data, slowing down your network and interfering with business-critical applications. Our systems ensure maximum application availability enabling you to meet corporate governance and business continuance requirements. The Linksys Small Business Series is the affordable, reliable, high quality networking solution that helps you do business smarter. Secure and easy to install and maintain, it's built to grow with your business. In addition the RVS4000 features a Virtual Private Network (VPN) security engine that creates encrypted "IPSec tunnels" through the Internet. The IPSec VPN tunnels enable remote users from at home, or on the road to easily, and securely connect to the office network through a typical wired or wireless broadband connection. When used with another RVS4000 or other Linksys VPN router, "branch-to-branch" connections can be established allowing users in a remote office to connect to the corporate network.

Strengths: Runs stable and cool, support gigabit with secure firewall functions, easy to setup and great features in control interface
Summary: This router is much powerful than usual home-use broadband routers. It may be recommended to small business. It support giga-bit ethernet, great security options, VPN function. It runs pretty stable without any problem. The setup is also easy but you have a lot of choices. Overall it is good.

Strengths: - Super easy to setup VPN soluton for mobile PCs.- Super light.....almost feels as if there is nothign inside!- Very well priced (when using price search engine)
Summary: This is the most affordable VPN solution that includes gigabit ports. I am a fairly experienced end user and I had no problems setting up this VPN. However I am using it to connect my notebook computer to my home network and therefore I am NOT implementing a VPN to VPN router solution. As such my positive experience is based on the Linksys proprietary VPN solution for computers which for my purposes works well. I have read critiques from other users saying that the device is too difficult and I agree. At least 1/3 of the features are not properly explained in the manual. This is NOT a device for an inexperienced user to setup or somebody that gives up easily. You need to either be very experienced in networking or have a lot of patience to figure things out. For those of you who can hadle it, it offers good value for money, particulary if you search around and get a good price. The QuickVPN solution works well and is easy to setup. As to the other tyupes of VPN I am unable to evaluate them as I don't use them.

Strengths: Feature set (VPN, QoS, VLAN, DHCP, Gigabit LAN interface), stability (assuming clean configuration)
Summary: This product has such promise given its feature set and price point, but is marred by persistent bugs in the firmware, which Linksys does not seem to be in any rush to fix. My router is running firmware v1.1.12 pre-installed, but the latest version available online from the Linksys support page is v1.1.09, dated 27-Feb-2007 (nearly a year old now).

I purchased the RVS4000 for the QoS features in order to prioritize my Vonage VoIP voice packets over data packets on my home Gigabit LAN. The Netgear WNR854T (wireless-N with Gigabit LAN interface) that I own does not have any QoS features (and it failed after 6 months and was replaced, but I fear another failure in 6 months).

What works:
a) QoS (port based priority)
b) DHCP/address reservations
c) VPN (QuickVPN client to RVS4000)
d) VLAN

What does not work:
a) Remote HTTP/HTTPS administration (although you can use VPN to remotely manage the router)

Other bugs:
a) New VLANs do not get the same firewall rules as the default VLAN 1 (all ports run on VLAN 1 out of the box)
b) DHCP address reservations can be deleted, but cannot be reused for the same IP address subsequently (workaround: modify existing reservations instead of deleting and re-creating)
c) Restoring previous configuration settings failed after resetting the router to factory defaults (had to reset it again and manually configure)

Although the RVS4000 is doing what I need it to (i.e., stabilize my VoIP communications), I now wish that I had waited for the Netgear WNR3500 (wireless-N with Gigabit LAN interface and QoS) to completely replace my WNR854T, although it was not available (or even advertised) at the time.

This router is difficult and time consuming to configure due to the firmware bugs; get it right the first time, or you may be forced to reset it and start over. Even then, some features just don’t work as advertised. I would not purchase this router again, and do not recommend that you purchase it either. I already plan to replace it within the next 6-12 months (and I just purchased it!) unless Linksys finally fixes the bugs. Although it is advertised as an entry-level business class router, it should not even be considered by home users, let alone a small/medium business (SMB).
