product reviews |
Strengths: Very slim, great features, good sound. Summary: First of all, I am not a extremely discerning audiophile. I am a little-pickier-than-most, typical consumer, looking for a high performance-to-price ratio on an all-in-one AV receiver. I am well-versed in home theater setup. The RX-D301S is the silver version of the RX-D302B. It is around the middle of the JVC receiver line. It lacks the built-in XM capabilities of some of the other receivers, but does include video upconvert (composite to S-video or component OR S-video to component). It supports the standard plethora of sources (FM/AM/DTR/DVD/DBS/VCR/TV/USB). It supports a reasonable set of component/S-video/composite inputs and outputs for video and digital optical/digital RCA/RCA inputs and outputs for audio. My favorite features: + Easy mapping of input ports to different sources allowing me to configure the combinations of video and audio inputs for each source. + 480i/720p/1080i upconvert so that all video signals can use a single input on my TV, thus eliminating the need to switch inputs on my TV. + Crossover control in the receiver itself for my subwoofer. + Wireless USB speaker adapter allows me to play MP3's on my PC and output directly to the receiver wirelessly. Comes with a USB dongle for your PC. From a performance perspective, the sound from the unit is very good. I have no complaints, but I am not looking for (nor do I have the ear for) reference quality audio. There are a number of digital effects available, but I really haven't explored them. My only complaint so far is the heat this unit generates. I keep my AV equipment in an armoire; I think I'm going to have to install some exhaust fans between this device, my Media Center PC, and trusty, old-fashioned tube-TV, albeit an HDTV tube TV :-). Again, if you are looking for an all-in-one AV receiver with a (in my opinion) high performance-to-price ratio, I would recommend you look at the JVC RX-D301S/RX-D302B. Strengths: GREAT PRICE. NICE INPUTS. COMPONENT AND USB INPUTS. Summary: GREAT PRICE AND A GREAT UNIT. I BOUGHT THIS TO PUT INTO MY BEDROOM AND IT HAS BEEN WONDERFUL. I JUST WISHED IT HAD HDMI, BUT STILL WORKS WELL FOR WHAT I NEED.
