Historically the server market has been segmented by socket counts and volume has gravitated to form factors based on pricing, as opposed to customer needs. Combined with a substantial price premium on processors for 4 and 8 socket systems, this resulted in 2P servers being sold for most implementations. Rather than focusing on the number of sockets available in a server, AMD is focusing on the needs of its customers.
