Strengths: Fast, strong brand name, compact (for a color laserjet/copier) Summary: ******************************** GENERAL COMMENTS, THOUGHTS, ETC. ******************************** It is a well built unit, and is on the heavy side. It is moderately quick about warm-up times, copy times, etc. It is NOT by any stretch the quietest color laser I've used. It works well with both MAC & WINDOW OS's, I haven't tried it with Linux yet... It is easy to network.
********************* BUY THIS MACHINE IF: ********************* 1) You are sick of swapping out inkjet cartridges, and you don't care if your image quality suffers some. 2) You want something faster and more reliable than an inkjet.
3) You need to be able to make quick copies, but can't afford or don't have the space for a real copy machine. 4) You need something more compact than a standard color laserjet, or color copier.
5) You want a lower cost for replacement parts (since hp has about 85% of the market).
***************** DON'T BUY IT IF: ***************** 1) #5 Above doesn't apply to you and you want something even faster, that is more compact, and less expensive... other manufacturers have better options for you.
2) You think the footprint of your all-in-one inkjet is too big.
3) You need to limit office noise.
4) You intend to fax things--fax is NOT included.
5) Your sole motivation is to save money on ink... it's not likely that you will save much over the lifetime of the device, given the associated costs. ************************************************************** ADDITIONAL INSIGHT IN CASE YOU REALLY THINK YOU MIGHT BUY IT: ************************************************************** Put the appropriate install CD into a nearby computer prior to unpacking it. It will have easy to follow instructions, prior to any driver installation. Trust me, the on-screen set-up is far easier to follow than the included manual, which lacks clarity. As a general complaint, the interface is useful, but not as informative as I'd like. I have networked this printer to several computers, via a TCP/IP set-up. As I was getting started, I was frustrated, because I couldn't get the model to dynamically receive an IP Address. It turned out that the particular jack I had plugged into on my router was defective, so it was in no way the printer's fault. However, I would have figured it out much more quickly if the interface had indicated no network activity. Instead, all I could do was print out the network config report every few minutes, and see that the device had not yet acquired an address. Before purchasing, I'd first consider buying it's big brother that includes the fax. It includes an additional paper tray, which is far more convenient than the poorly designed front loading/hanging set-up you get with this model. Also, the big brother fax model comes with a built in card reader for SD, MMC, XD, etc. I didn't miss it, because I won't be using this printer with a digital camera, but if I were, I'd buy the other model in a heartbeat, even if I didn't need the fax aspect.
