Strengths: - Robust- Reliable- Easy Setup & Management- Fairly Small Footprint (compared to similar units)- Auto-Save & Graceful PC Shutdown using software- Good Bettery Performance
Summary: The APC Smart-UPS 750VA UB is a solid purchase and robust solution for a Home/Home-Office setup. The unit is and performs as advertised with easy setup and management.
Using the included USB Cable, the UPS can be attached to a PC and with the included software, it's easy to install and setup management of all PCs connected to the UPS using a Mgmt or Client application and intra-machine messaging/alerts etc. It may have been nicer if this interface was Ethernet (vs. USB) or at least if the option was available. USB connections rely on the connected PC being on and running to access server/client administration. Ethernet based connection would not require the PC to be on, rather you could administer the device from any network connected PC vs. only the one to which the device is directly connected.
The 6 outlets on the back of the unit are just adequate for the device. 8 would have been better, but it runs the risk of potentially overloading the unit’s optimal capacity. All 6 outlets are on the Backup Battery (vs. Surge protection only) which is nice; however I would recommend only connecting your Mission Critical equipment (PCs, Monitors, Routers, Broadband Modems etc.). Printers and other peripherals should be on Surge Protection only products to avoid overloading this UPS or causing it to drain faster than desired supporting less-than critical devices during a power outage.
It would have been nice to see Surge Protection support for Phone, Ethernet & Coaxial lines via a pass-through, but this can be found on Surge Protector devices which I recommend for Printers, Peripherals etc...
I like the graceful shutdown feature which allows the unit to auto-save and close applications before shutting down the PC when the battery enters critical/shutdown sequence. I wish this feature was also available for the Mac OS, but in it’s current state it supports PCs only.
After fully charging the unit for a few days, I tested its battery runtime with a full load of: 2 PCs, 1 Monitor, 1 KVM, 1 Laptop and 1 Router & Switch attached and I was able to get over 6 mins of time of Battery Backup before the unit started the graceful shutdown sequence. This is more than the advertised 4.5 mins, but that figure may have been based on 6 PCs vs. the setup I tested.
The unit performs as expected or better. I would like to see equivalent Mac OS compatibility w/ the admin software and possibly a small LCD display on the front to make an easier visual reading of the unit's status possible...but short of those few items, I was very satisfied with the product and would buy again to satisfy similar setup.
